Ahmad Shah Bahmani

Ahmad Shah Bahmani
(?-1435)
He was one of the younger brothers of Sultan Taj al-Din Firuz Shah Bahmani (1397-1422) and became influential on account of his important role in wars against Vijayanagar. Following Firuz Shah's defeat at Pangal at the hands of Vijayanagar forces in 1420, he became a de facto ruler, which led to his formally ascending the throne in 1422. He forced the Vijayanagar ruler Deva Raya to pay tribute to him and also subjugated the Raja of Warangal in Telingana (1424). Sultan Ahmad Shah inflicted a crushing defeat on Hoshang Shah of Malwa (1429). Following this victory, he laid the foundation of Bidar and shifted his capital from Gulbarga to this new township. His policy of securing his northern frontier entangled him in hostilities with the sultanate of Gajarat during 1430-1432, which ended only after the Bahmanis withdrew from Baglana and Mahim. Ahmad Shah died in 1435, leaving the Bahmani kingdom in a state of turmoil due to renewed rebellion of the chiefs of Telingana and heightened tensions within the nobility between the immigrants (afaqis) and old settlers (dakhanis).
